In the last one year, I have avidly pursued blog-surfing. I wanted to know what and how people thought. I also maintained a blog to understand this process better.
And I have found one thing. No matter where people are from - US, Australia, Singapore, India - the major affliction across the world is suffering. It is horrifyingly simple.
Broken and problemetic relationships are the major causes of this suffering. And it leads to a myriad problems: low self-esteem, low self-confidence, suicidal tendencies, violent anger or extreme depression.
One blog even said that relationships were the most important thing in life. Maybe this is true; maybe the whole world believes this, and that is why a failed relationship causes intense grief and agony.
The simple cure for this suffering is for us to open our eyes and realize the truth behind relationships. First of all, society and media place too much emphasis on relationships. The concept of "romantic love" is glorified everywhere. We have to realize that this is hype. Life is not only about romance or limited love. It is about expansive love. Love should not be sought only in certain relationships. Indeed if love is supposed to be the basis of human life, then it should permeate everything we do. The form of love does not matter; only the concept and feeling does.
Second, most people today enter relationships seeking respect and love from another person. Essentially, they are either beggars begging for love and respect or traders agreeing to a contract to love and respect each other. Neither the beggar or trader relationship can work for a very long time, because sooner or the later, one party starts to feel that he/she is receiving less in return for what they are giving. This is the cause of failures in relationships. Life should be lived like a king. Always giving love and respect to others without expecting even gratitude in return, because one truly is a king with unlimited resources of love and respect within oneself.
It is incredibly simple. But our foolish desires arising from our ignorance makes life very complicated and hard to live.
